The Friesian horses are gorgeous and majestic horses originating in a Dutch province named Friesland. At first they were used as work horses, nevertheless, their physical characteristics, agility and grace created a great preference between the nobility for diverse activities.
During the Middle Ages, the Friesian Horses enjoyed great demand all of Europe, their strength and size allowed them to handle armored knights. Becoming horses used by soldiers put them in danger of extinction. In the present day, the friesian horse enjoys great popularity and their number continues growing around the world and evolving in diverse scopes.
Without any question, their physical prowess set the friesians apart from other breeds. Spectacular horsehair, tail and their legs give them natural born elegance. Friesians are only bred in the color black, the register rules are very clear and few exceptions are made unless there's a white star on forehead. Brown color friesians may be born, nevertheless, those cannot be registered. On early stages of development, the colts have gray color with reddish hues but the color will changed. In 3 years they will show their main characteristics. The average height for a Friesian is 15,3 hands (1,60 m), it may change from 14,2 to 17 hands (between 1,50 and 1,70 m), the mares must have at least 15,2 hands (1,57 m) to qualify for star pedigree.
It has a spectacular trot, both fast and high-stepping. The Friesian is very willing, active, and energetic but gentle and docile. A Friesian tends to have great presence and to carry itself very proudly.
Friesians have long, elegant, arched necks and fine extended short-eared (Spanish type) heads. Their sloping shoulders are quite powerful. They have compact yet muscular bodies with strong sloping hindquarters and a low-set tail. Their limbs are comparatively short and strong. Like fashion models, Friesians have good bone structure and impressive hair.
The demand for this breed grows day by day, they combine intelligence, strength and control. The Friesian is used mainly for dressage. It also remains popular as a carriage horse, including competitions. Because it is easy to match teams and its high-stepping action makes it eye-catching and impressive. They are also good for showing, driving, and general riding, therapeutic riding and are also used as circus horses.
